Samvardhana Motherson International Limited (SMIL), through its energy subsidiary Motherson New Energy Limited (MNEL), has commissioned its first ground-mounted captive solar power project in Uttar Pradesh via its subsidiary Onega Solar Private Limited.
The 15 MWp solar plant, located in Mahoba, Uttar Pradesh, will provide renewable electricity to several Motherson manufacturing facilities across the state, marking a significant step in the company’s clean energy transition and sustainability journey.
Developed as a group captive renewable energy project, the facility is expected to generate approximately 23.4 GWh of electricity annually while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 17,000 tonnes each year. In addition to its environmental benefits, the project is expected to improve energy cost predictability, strengthen operational resilience, and reduce reliance on conventional energy sources.
The project was developed in collaboration with ib vogt, which supported key aspects of implementation, including land acquisition, regulatory approvals, technical design, and engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services.
According to the company, the commissioning aligns with its broader strategy of increasing renewable energy adoption across its manufacturing operations and advancing long-term sustainability and energy security goals. MNEL is also evaluating additional renewable energy opportunities across multiple states in India as part of its growth plans.
Laksh Vaaman Sehgal, Vice Chairman of Motherson, stated that the project demonstrates the company’s commitment to embedding sustainability into its long-term value creation strategy while building resilient and future-ready operations. Kunal Vohra, COO of the energy business, highlighted that access to reliable and competitively priced renewable power is becoming increasingly important for manufacturing competitiveness and that the project serves as a foundation for expanding the company’s clean energy portfolio.
Parish Gupta, CEO and Managing Director of ib vogt Solar India, said the partnership underscores a shared commitment to accelerating industrial decarbonization through commercially viable renewable energy solutions.
